Being Double Board Certified means that the lawyer has (1) demonstrated to the Texas Board of Legal Specialization (“TBLS”) that they are substantially involved and have a special competence in personal injury law and in civil trial law; (2) obtained positive references from other attorneys and judges; and (3) passed a comprehensive examination.
Less than 1% of all lawyers in Texas are Double Board Certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization
According to the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, currently more than 100,000 attorneys are licensed to practice in the state of Texas, but only 980 (less than 1%) are Double Board Certified.
The Texas Bar website has a section called “Why Choose Board Certified”? Read this to find out why the Texas State Bar recommends choosing a lawyer who is Board Certified. Among other things, the Bar says that Board Certification is a “mark of excellence” and a “distinguishing accomplishment.”
When you’re looking for the right attorney for your injury or wrongful death case, you’re probably looking for lawyers who can answer your questions, looking for a proven track record of success, and looking for what their clients have to say about working with them.
R. Stephen “Steve” Ferrell of The Ferrell Law Firm, P.C. has been Double Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law and Civil Trial law for nearly three decades.
To become Board Certified in personal injury trial law, lawyers have to meet the TBLS’s requirements:
1. The lawyer must have substantial involvement and special competence in personal injury trial law. The attorney must devote at least 25% of his or her time to personal injury law, and must have tried, as lead counsel, at least ten contested civil cases to verdict.
2. The lawyer must obtain positive references from at least four Texas attorneys who are substantially involved in personal injury law, and one judge of record in Texas whom the lawyer has appeared before as an advocate in a personal injury case
3. The lawyer must pass an extensive written examination.
Many attorneys say they’ve won millions of dollars for their clients and worked on dozens or hundreds of cases. But most of these lawyers have never taken a case to trial, have never obtained a successful verdict for their clients, and may have never handled your type of case before. They can say they’re experienced, but unless they can say they’re Board Certified in personal injury trial law their experience hasn’t been vetted by the TBLS, which is an independent organization. The truth is, if you have a catastrophic injury or wrongful death case, they probably aren’t qualified to help you with your case.
A board certified attorney has a proven track record of success and has been vetted by the TBLS as someone who specializes in personal injury trial law. The more serious the injuries, the more complicated the issues, the more people or companies involved, the more experienced your attorney will need to be. Would you risk hiring someone who has never handled your type of case and has never won a trial? Or would you rather hire a board certified attorney who has experience handling your type of case and has won multiple jury verdicts for their clients?
